Classic Smash Burger

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend works well for juicy burgers)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Sliced cheese (American cheese works great)

  • Burger buns

  • Desired toppings (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, etc.)

  • Condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.)

PREPARATION

  1. Preheat your griddle or skillet: Heat a large, flat griddle or skillet over medium-high heat. Make sure it's nice and hot before you start cooking.

  2. Prepare the beef: Divide the ground beef into equal-sized balls, about 2-3 ounces each. Season each ball generously with salt and pepper.

  3. Get smashing: Place one beef ball onto the hot griddle or skillet. Using a sturdy spatula or burger press, firmly press down on the ball to flatten it into a thin patty. Press down for about 10-15 seconds to ensure good contact with the cooking surface. Repeat with the remaining beef balls, leaving some space between each patty.

  4. Cook the patties: Let the patties cook without disturbing them for about 2-3 minutes. You should see the edges start to brown and crisp up.

  5. Flip and add cheese: Once the edges are browned and crispy, use a spatula to carefully flip each patty. Immediately place a slice of cheese on top of each patty and allow it to melt.

  6. Toast the buns: While the cheese is melting, lightly toast the burger buns on the griddle until they are golden brown.

  7. Assemble the burgers: Remove the patties from the griddle once the cheese is melted and the burgers are cooked to your desired level of doneness. Place each patty on a toasted bun and top with your favorite toppings and condiments.
